PhD opportunity in fisheries ecology at UAF

Ph.D. Graduate Research Assistantship in Fisheries Ecology 
University of Alaska Fairbanks 
 
Location: This position will be located in Juneau, Alaska, at the Juneau Fisheries Center of the University of Alaska Fairbanks. 
 
Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting research on groundfish trophic interactions in the Gulf of Alaska. The two major goals of this project are to: (1) develop an index of predation that accounts for spatial and temporal variation in groundfish consumption of walleye pollock for application to the Gulf of Alaska pollock stock assessment; and (2) examine resource partitioning between Pacific halibut and arrowtooth flounder to better understand their potential competition for shared prey, including walleye pollock. For both project components, the student will analyze an extensive time series of environmental and ecological data provided by NOAA Fisheries. In addition, the student will be expected to collect and analyze stomach contents of halibut and arrowtooth flounder in a collaborative field study with the Southeast Alaska sport charter industry. The student will be advised by Dr. Anne Beaudreau and work closely with collaborators at NOAA Alaska Fisheries Science Center, Oregon State University, NCEAS, and the charter fishing industry. This research is funded by the Pollock Conservation Cooperative Research Center. 
 
Qualifications: A Master’s degree in fisheries, ecology, or a related field is required. The successful applicant will be highly motivated; possess excellent writing, communication, and quantitative skills; and show an interest in using field and quantitative approaches to address basic and applied questions in marine ecology. Ideally, the applicant should have experience with R programming and conducting fieldwork from small motorized boats. 
 
Salary: $27,000-28,000 per year, plus benefits and tuition, for 3.5 years. Additional funding may be sought to supplement salary, up to $32,000 per year.
