The Q-EAF course (Quantitative - Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries) - taught in English!
During the last decades marine ecosystems have been changing at surprising rates in a global change context. Under strong and increasing anthropogenic pressures the complexity of dynamic interactions (e.g., between overexploitation, climate change, species migrations…) questions our ability to efficiently understand, predict and manage marine resources.
This course will provide the overall scientific and strategic framework for developing and implementing the ecosystem approach with a special focus on modeling marine ecosystems. This course will first introduce global challenges and the necessity to develop a multi-stressors approach to marine socio-ecological systems dynamics in the framework of the newly launched IPBES (Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services), the analog of the IPCC for biodiversity. The course will address the scientific requirements that are needed to build this long-term strategy and the required ecosystem models. This course will present the current models that are used to explore future ecosystem dynamics. It will be presenting development of predictive models, applications to concrete ecosystem case studies and several R applications necessary for the EAF.
